If you’re looking into fuel oil for your home, price is probably at the forefront of your mind, but is it going to rise? Some people tend to think so at this point in time. The oil industry is always in turmoil of one form or another and as such there are more than a few people who worry for the future of the price of oil on Long Island.

There is an old saying about ‘borrowing trouble’, but in this case those projects and concerns might actually have a bit of merit. There is one analyst, Zev Spiro who believes that we could be heading straight toward a future where oil costs $70 per barrel, which is a pretty grim future to say the least.

Zev Spiro on the Future Price of Oil on Long Island

Spiro has states, almost definitively that the rise in prices is not something that is being ‘sprung’ on us at the last minute. In fact, he makes it clear that the change has been building up for the last year, pointing out that much if it began in July 2015. The patterns definitely indicate the potential for a change, or more accurately an upward inflection. This statement, however, is not made in an absolute sense. Spiro made the following statement to CNBC:

“This large complex bottoming pattern could trigger a confirmed move above the horizontal neckline in the $50-$51 area, This would signal a primary uptrend with a minimum expected price objective in the $73 to $76 area.”

The Calm Before the Storm with  Heating Oil on Long Island

You’ve surely heard of ‘the calm before the storm’. It’s an old nautical term that still has plenty of relevance today. Essentially referring to a calm period that occurs just before trouble breaks out, much in the same way the seas are calm just before a major storm. Spiro has stated that the increase in price might come right after several short term losses for the oil industry, and Spiro has certainly shown plenty of evidence to support this theory. It would be unfortunate for consumers, but investors would definitely be pleased to see this potential development become a stark reality.

Get Cheap Oil on Long Island

Finding cheap oil on Long Island isn’t always the easiest thing in the world but it’s not impossible, even with the impending hike in market prices. Oil traded on Friday morning for around $47, and for the moment, it’s remaining pretty steady, which is definitely good news for the consumer.

That being the case, you can continue to heat your home with COD Oil and other sources without a considerable issue. The change will come slowly, and there is definitely a chance that it will decline given enough time.

There has been some major confusion over the years as to whether or not there is a significant difference between home heating oil on Long Island and diesel fuel. The confusion comes from the fact that you can substitute diesel for home heating oil and seemingly suffer no problems. There are some issues with doing so however which we will get to momentarily. For now, let’s talk about the differences between the two.

Understanding the Difference Between Home Heating Oil Long Island and Diesel

Home Heating Oil on Long Island and Diesel Fuel

Diesel Fuel – Diesel is heavier than standard gasoline and takes on the appearance of oil. One of the properties that people find most memorable is that it is not quick to evaporate, nor it is it as volatile as gasoline. In addition to that it is less expensive than gasoline and therefore commonly used to power:

  • Boats
  • Trucks
  • Trains
  • Buses
  • Boats
  • And more

There are several variants of diesel, one of which is used for off-road vehicles in the US.

Heating Oil – Home heating oil is really just an umbrella term for fuels that can be mixed with heavier oil and ultimately produce more heat while they are burning. Due to their chemical composition that burn hot but burn less, making them far more efficient than their diesel counterpart.

Practical Differences Between Heating Oil and Diesel

Even if you’re trying to skirt around fuel oil prices in NY, diesel probably isn’t the way to go about it. Home heating oil is slightly higher in BTU content than diesel meaning you’ll have to burn far more diesel fuel in your system to achieve the same amount of heat. In other words while it might work in a punch, you certainly won’t want it for your long term solution. As far as the inverse goes, home heating oil does not have the same lubricating properties as diesel which means it cannot be used for automobiles or large moving equipment. When you’re in the process of choosing home heating oil in Suffolk County NY, make sure that you’re getting the best – there is no substitute.

What Is Cetane?

The last point that we are going to mention is the cetane factor which is similar to octane in gasoline. In any diesel engine there is a minimum cetane value that must be maintained if the engine is to work properly and it is usually settled on that a 40 cetane ceiling is acceptable, though there are some that require a 45. Understand that the additives used to make diesel engines work properly are NOT good for your furnace. It might work in a pinch, so to speak, but as time goes by you are going to discover that the furnace becomes sluggish, making it even more important to work with today’s oil price and ultimately get the solution you need to keep your house warm.
